The competition at quarterback and running back was the focus Thursday as Husker coaches and players talked with the media after practice. Quarterbacks coach Mario Verduzco said he feels good about his room. He said Adrian Martinez and Luke McCaffrey continue to lead the way. He added that McCaffrey, who is up to 205 pounds, has gotten a “boatload” of reps during camp so far and has run with both the 1s and the 2s.

Husker running backs coach Ryan Held said senior running back Dedrick Mills is going to be the “bell cow” this year. Mills led the Husker running backs in carries, yards, and touchdowns last season. Behind Mills, the Huskers have an inexperienced group. When discussing who could step up as the No. 2 back, Held mentioned redshirt freshmen Rahmir Johnson and Ronald Thompkins. Held also had high praise for his two freshman running backs, Sevion Morrison and Marvin Scott III. Don’t expect to see Wan’Dale Robinson in the backfield much in 2020. Held said he’s a slot receiver and he will be primarily focused there.
