NE Strong Update

By News Sep 25, 2020 | 6:50 AM

One of our Nebraska natives and fan favorites is calling it a career. Former Husker and Lincoln native Alex Gordon has announced he is retiring from Major League Baseball at the end of this season. Gordon, who played his entire 14 year career with the Kanas City Royals, earned seven gold gloves and a World Series ring in 2015. The Royals wrap up the abbreviated 2020 season on Sunday.

Grand Island Public Schools and their academies at Grand Island Senior High are partnering with CHI Health St. Francis to transform the 8th floor into a medical science academy. It will include several labs, break rooms and a lobby. 20 GISH faculty members, hospital workers and staff will be teaching students. Students will spend some days at the hospital, and others in a traditional classroom setting at GISH. They will learn how to care for patients, repair high-tech equipment, assess injuries and other skills. Students who finish the healthcare labs will complete their nursing assistant and medication-aide licenses, and students in the emergency services path will also receive certifications through Central Community College. The academy will expose students to the 250 careers in healthcare field.  It will be funded through businesses and donations.
