KGFW Sports – PAC-12 and MW Conference Football, More Returns, Gordon Retires and High School Update

By News Sep 25, 2020 | 6:53 AM

The Pac-12 on Thursday set a Nov. 6th start date for a seven-game conference-only football season. The conference’s CEO group of university presidents voted unanimously to resume football and basketball, lifting a Jan. 1 moratorium on athletic competition for all Pac-12 schools. The football championship game will be held on Dec. 18. The Pac-12 said its decision to restart sports is subject to approval from state and local public health officials. No fans will be permitted at Pac-12 sporting events taking place on campus.

The Mountain West will play an eight-game, conference-only schedule, beginning the weekend of Oct. 24. The conference’s 12 presidents approved the plan Thursday night. The conference championship game is scheduled for Dec. 19, the day before New Year’s Six and other bowl announcements are made.

The NCAA Division I Football Oversight Committee on Thursday recommended waiving the typical benchmarks for qualifying for a bowl game. The recommendation means teams will not have to finish with a .500 record or better to be eligible for postseason play as long as they meet the academic standards based on the Academic Progress Report.

Purdue wideout Rondale Moore has had a change of heart and is opting back in to the 2020 season. Moore, in 2018, became the first true freshman consensus All-American in Big Ten history. He was also named first-team All-Big Ten his freshman year both for offense and special teams and won the Paul Hornung Award as the nation’s most versatile player. He said on Aug. 6 that he would opt out of the season to begin preparing for the 2021 NFL draft, citing “unprecedented circumstances” surrounding the coronavirus pandemic. The Huskers are set to face the Boilermakers Dec. 12th in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Former Husker and Nebraska native Alex Gordon has announced he is retiring at the end of this season. Gordon was selected by the Royals with the No. 2 overall draft pick in 2005 and has spent his entire 14-year career with Kansas City. After starting his big league career primarily as a third baseman, He moved to left field and became one of baseball’s top defenders at the position, winning seven Gold Gloves over a nine-year stretch. He also was one of the leaders on the Royal’s World Series-winning team in 2015. He belted a game-tying home run in the ninth inning of Game 1, which Kansas City ultimately won in 14 innings. He is sixth in Royals franchise history in games played (1,748), hits (1,641), runs scored (866), RBIs (749) and at-bats (6,377). The Royals wrap up the abbreviated 2020 season on Sunday.

The Hastings College football team is hosting Doane tomorrow as part of the Bronco’s Homecoming celebration. Both teams are 1-1 on the season. The Broncos are coming off an overtime road loss at Concordia last week. The Broncos and Tigers are set to kickoff at 1:00 at Lloyd Wilson Field.
