NE Strong UPDATE

By News Sep 4, 2020 | 5:53 AM

No fall Husker football isn’t stopping The Lincoln Convention and Visitors Bureau, the University of Nebraska athletic department and the Downtown Lincoln Association.  They have organized the City of Red initiative, and they’re encouraging fans to show their Husker spirit and make a day of it in Lincoln, buy red-themed items, visit local establishments,  and stay overnight in a hotel. The website cityofred.com has a list creative ways people can still celebrate game day and support the local economy.

The Hall County Historical Society has finally finished fundraising $48,000 for their newspaper digitization project, to provide old newspaper articles on the web for free. Out of 28 newspapers published in Hall County from 1870 until now, The Historical Society has been able to digitize 27 of them in their entirety, except the Grand Island Independent. The newspaper database can be found on the Historical Society’s website.

The Grand Island Salvation Army is seeing an increased need during the COVID-19 pandemic, which is in turn creating some needs of their own. Since the start of the pandemic, the Salvation Army transformed its Hot Meal Program into to-go meals only.  Staff is giving out about 280 meals a day for lunch and dinner, nearly double the amount they gave out pre-pandemic. The added cost of to-go containers leaves less money for the Salvation Army to purchase food. Right now, they have about one month of meals left before food runs out. Meat is one thing the Salvation Army needs the most. Fruit – fresh or canned, noodles and large cans of condensed soup are also welcome. Food or monetary donations can be taken to the Grand Island Salvation Army, 818 W. 3rd St., from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Grand Island Salvation Army is also in need of volunteers to help prepare food for lunch and dinner and with cleanup. Call the facility at 308-382-4855 for more information.
