KEARNEY, Neb. – (KGFW) Money was raised over this past weekend through Kearney CrossFit partnering up for Operation NETS.

“This year we partnered up with CHI Health and the Kearney Police Department to do a two-part event called ‘Fitness for Heroes.’

The first part took place last Friday from 4:30 in the morning until Saturday morning at 7am. Basically we just biked and it was all free will donations for anyone that came through the door. You could stay for five minutes or five hours but they were donating it all for Operation NETS,” said Kearney CrossFit Owner Trevor Brown.

Brown explained what Operation NETS is.

“It’s a program Kearney Police Chief Bryan Waugh was a part of when he was in Omaha and started it there. Operation NETS stands for Neighborhood Engagement Through Sports. All the money we raise goes towards sporting goods equipment. Equipment for kids in the Kearney community.

Officers will do things like keeping footballs and basketballs in their cars throughout the year. They’ll just stop and play catch with the kids and talk to them and just build those relationships. Then the officers will leave their sporting equipment with the kids.”

The day long event led to an $8,000 donation this year towards Operation NETS. Brown is already planning for next year’s event.
