NE Strong Update

As the November election approaches and there is an expected influx of mail-in ballots, the Buffalo County Election Commissioner reminds voters that they don’t have to be returned by mail. Drop boxes are available at the courthouse. Postcards will be sent by Sept. 1, allowing voters to officially request a mail-in ballot – which will be sent out beginning Oct. 5.

The USHL has targeted Friday, November 6th as the start of the 2020-2021 season. Under the plan released Tuesday, teams will play 54 regular season games. Players are scheduled to arrive over a four-week period beginning September 14th, with preseason games targeted to begin in mid-October. All activities are designed to take place in accordance with local, state and federal guidelines as well as the League’s Return to Play Protocols which are currently being finalized. The league expects to announce the release of its 54-game regular season schedule in the coming weeks.

Nebraska football is planning on returning to organized workouts next week. How the Huskers will use the allotted time during the fall semester is still being discussed.

High school students applying for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) or for the university’s scholarships will not be required to submit standardized college admissions test scores. The Nebraska Board of Regents has approved a new policy making this change. The new policy applies across the NU system.

The University of Nebraska at Kearney has commissioned the nonprofit, Impact Art to create a mural in downtown Kearney as a way to showcase their pride in UNK students, both past and present. The mural is currently being created in downtown Kearney at the corner of 21st Street and Central Ave on the side of Nelson’s Furniture Store.

Grand Island Central Catholic has started the school year with a new staff member; a therapy dog.  Shire is a 17 month old therapy dog and is the personal dog of one of the teachers. With all of the changes and stress of this year, the hope is that shire can make it a little easier for their students. Shire will be available to any student who may need to spend some time with him.
